Linsinger high performance rail milling technology is a spark and dust free rotational cutting process resulting in the formation of metal chips to be cut out of the rail surface. Rail milling achieves low (as little as 0.1mm / 0.004in) to high (up to 5mm / 0.2 in, dependent on machine type) metal removal rates in one milling pass with up to 2 kph (1.3 mph) processing speed. The resultant rail profile of high precision is defined by the shape of the cutter head. Any defined rail profile can be produced by this process and changing from one profile to another can be done on the fly or within a few minutes (dependent on the number of milling units per train). The heat of the milling process is mostly transferred into the metal chips and the milling tool. This avoids unwanted material transformations of the rail surface (martensite, bluing). The metal chips are collected on board the milling machine and can be recycled afterwards. In order to produce a noise-optimised surface finish a polishing unit (completely enclosed longitudinal grinding wheel with a small off-set angle) is also included in the machine. This results in a surface roughness of Ra < 5µm and a perfectly smooth longitudinal profile meeting highest noise standards.

Dependent on rail damage conditions and metal removal depth the carbide inserts of the cutter heads can last up to 2km of restored rail. In the case of worn or damaged inserts, the cutter heads are changed within several minutes to optimise available track time. The carbide inserts are turned or exchanged after the shift. Milling inserts can be turned up to 7 times before they will be recycled. Dependent on cutter head diameter (400mm or 600mm) one cutter head consists of 140 / 220 inserts.
